Ramon Peguero, a 32-year-old Hispanic male from Hartford, Connecticut, was tragically killed on July 10, 2022, an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of a targeted shooting. On that Sunday afternoon, Peguero was among a large gathering of motorcycle and ATV enthusiasts at the Atlas Gas Station on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport. The vibrant meetup turned into a scene of chaos at approximately 4:55 p.m.
when two men on a white scooter approached the crowd.
The passenger on the scooter, later identified as 18-year-old Jahmir Daniel, opened fire. His intended target was 18-year-old Kazzmaire Dorsey of Bridgeport, who was also struck multiple times. During the hail of gunfire, a stray bullet struck Peguero in the torso. Both Peguero and Dorsey were rushed to local hospitals. Peguero was pronounced dead at the hospital, while Dorsey succumbed to his injuries nearly two weeks later. Peguero had no connection to the shooter or the intended victim. His girlfriend later spoke of his love for the "bike life" and how the community's gatherings would not be the same without him.
An investigation by the Bridgeport Police Department, aided by surveillance footage, led to the identification of the suspects. The driver of the scooter was 19-year-old Everton Brooks, who confessed to his role in the incident. The investigation revealed that after the shooting, Daniel and Brooks, with the help of 19-year-old Jack Vaz, attempted to hide the stolen scooter in a wooded area behind a library.
In August 2022, authorities arrested the three men involved. Jahmir Daniel faced the most severe charges, including murder with special circumstances and two counts of murder. Everton Brooks was also charged with murder, and Jack Vaz was charged with hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence. In January 2025, Jahmir Daniel was convicted of the murders of both Ramon Peguero and Kazzmaire Dorsey. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Everton Brooks pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution and was awaiting sentencing.
