On a Sunday evening in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of 21-year-old Leogiovanni Fernandes Spencer, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On September 8, 2019, at approximately 9:20 p.m., Spencer was sitting in the passenger seat of a car at the end of Gem Avenue, near Whitney Place. In a sudden burst of violence, two shots were fired into the vehicle, striking Spencer in the head and neck.
The driver of the car, a friend of Spencer's, immediately sped away from the scene in a
desperate attempt to rush him to the hospital. In the ensuing panic, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed on Route 8 while trying to get onto Interstate 95 northbound. Though the driver was unharmed in the crash, the delay was critical. Medics arrived at the crash scene and transported Spencer to Bridgeport Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the days following the shooting, Bridgeport police announced that they were actively investigating the homicide and were searching for a suspect. They indicated that the shooting did not appear to be a random act of violence. A motive for the shooting was not immediately determined, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest.
As of late 2019, the investigation into Leogiovanni Fernandes Spencer's death was ongoing, but no arrests had been announced, and no suspect or suspects had been publicly identified. The case remained an open and active homicide investigation, leaving a void in the lives of his family and friends who remembered him as a creative and ambitious young man.
