On the evening of January 15, 2022, a young Black man named Herman Bellamy, 22, was shot and killed in Hamden, Connecticut. Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Fairview Avenue and Arch Street at approximately 10:45 p.m.. Upon arrival, they discovered Bellamy inside a vehicle in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation by Hamden police led to a swift arrest.
The day after the shooting, detectives took a suspect into custody. The individual arrested was 19-year-old Charles Hill of New Haven, who was a passenger in Bellamy's vehicle at the time of the incident. The preliminary investigation indicated that Hill had been firing a handgun from within Bellamy's car.
In connection with the death of Herman Bellamy, Charles Hill was initially charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal discharge of a firearm. Later, in March 2022, the charges against Hill were upgraded to include Manslaughter in the 1st Degree with a Firearm. Authorities recovered ballistic evidence and multiple handguns at the scene of the crime. The investigation into the homicide was described as ongoing, with police encouraging anyone with further information to come forward.
