A promising life was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of April 23, 2016, in Hamden, Connecticut. Jonathan Cooper, a 25-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot while visiting his hometown from Brooklyn, New York, where he had been building a life for himself. He had returned to the New Haven area for a joyous weekend meant to be filled with family celebrations, including supporting his sister's recent achievement and attending a cousin's birthday.
Originally from New Haven, Jonathan was a graduate of the Metropolitan Business Academy who had a passion for music and audio technology. He had furthered his education at the SAE Institute of Technology in New York City and was recently promoted to a manager position at a coffee shop in Manhattan. His family described him as a beloved son and brother who was inseparable from his sister, a young man with a heart of gold who brought joy to those around him.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. while Jonathan was stopped at a red traffic light at the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Arch Street. A dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside his vehicle, and an occupant from within fired multiple shots, striking him. When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Jonathan suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, leaving his family and community devastated by the sudden and senseless act of violence.
In the wake of the shooting, the Hamden Police Department's Major Crimes Division launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities appealed to the public for any information regarding the dark-colored SUV or any individuals who may have been involved. As of the information available, the investigation was ongoing, and no arrests have been publicly announced, nor have any suspects been officially named in connection with the murder.
