In the early morning hours of March 5, 2022, a tragic event unfolded on Hill Street in Waterbury, Connecticut, forever altering the lives of a local family. Glenys Naomi Aloyo, a 35-year-old Hispanic female, was fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m., also left a 38-year-old female companion critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find Aloyo, who was pronounced dead from her injuries.
Her friend was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital in critical but stable condition.
The Waterbury Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Detectives identified 43-year-old Omar Hernandez, who was described as Aloyo's estranged boyfriend, as the primary suspect in the deadly attack. Investigators determined that Hernandez had a relationship with Aloyo. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for Hernandez, charging him with murder, criminal attempt at murder, first-degree assault, and several firearm offenses. The search for Hernandez extended beyond Waterbury as authorities worked to bring him into custody.
The day after the fatal shooting, on March 6, 2022, the investigation took a grim turn. Authorities located Hernandez at his residence in West Haven, Connecticut. When officers attempted to serve the arrest warrant, they discovered Hernandez deceased inside the apartment. His death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled a suicide. The case, which began as a homicide investigation, concluded with the death of the sole suspect.
