Elijah Gomez, a 15-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on the afternoon of May 9, 2022, while walking home from school in Hamden, Connecticut. A freshman at Hamden High School, Elijah was a passionate football player, known for his polite and gentle nature. On that Monday, less than a week after his birthday, his life was cut short in a shocking act of violence that reverberated through his family, school, and the wider community.
He was on the Farmington Canal trail near Treadwell Street when he was ambushed and fatally shot. A witness reported hearing five gunshots and then saw three individuals fleeing the scene before discovering Elijah lying in a nearby driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Hamden Police Department, with assistance from multiple state and federal agencies, launched an extensive investigation into the homicide. Investigators determined that the attack was not random and that Elijah had been targeted, though a specific motive remains unclear. Surveillance footage from the area proved crucial, capturing three males following Elijah before concealing themselves behind trees. The video showed one of the individuals, later identified as 18-year-old Jenigh Ward, approaching Elijah and shooting him multiple times before all three suspects fled.
Through the use of surveillance video, which helped identify Ward's vehicle and clothing, and ballistic evidence found in his bedroom that matched shell casings from the scene, authorities were able to connect him to the crime. On June 6, 2022, Jenigh Ward was arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was held on a $1 million bond.
Ultimately, Jenigh Ward pleaded guilty to the charge of murder. In August 2024, at the age of 20, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the killing of Elijah Gomez. During the sentencing, Elijah's family expressed their immense grief and the profound loss of a caring young man. While Ward has been held accountable, the investigation remains active as police continue to work to identify the other two individuals who were with him on the day of the murder.
