Elijah W. Sims, a 17-year-old student from Oak Park and River Forest High School, was shot on August 29, 2016, while visiting friends in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. He was standing outside with his friends when an unidentified assailant opened fire, leaving Sims critically injured. Tragically, he passed away the following day, just shy of his 17th birthday. Another teenager was also injured in the incident but survived.
