Warren W. Strenger, a 26-year-old male from Chicago, IL, tragically lost his life on April 17, 2018. The incident occurred in the West Chatham neighborhood, where Strenger and two friends were on a lunch break, walking through the parking lot of a strip mall in the 200 block of West 87th Street. As they walked, a black minivan pulled up alongside them. Inside the vehicle were Anthony Bell, 22, and Antonio Henderson, 31.
Bell, the passenger, exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at Strenger and his friends. Henderson, the driver, initiated a conversation with Strenger, asking, "Don't I know you? Where are you from?" When Strenger responded with "No," Bell opened fire. Strenger and his friends attempted to flee, but Strenger was struck by multiple gunshots and fell face-first to the ground. Another man, aged 35, was also shot in the right arm during the incident.
Police officers nearby witnessed the shooting and immediately pursued the suspects. Bell re-entered the minivan, and Henderson sped away, leading the police on a high-speed chase onto the Dan Ryan Expressway. The chase ended when Henderson sideswiped a truck and crashed into the center median. Both suspects attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by the police. The firearm used in the shooting was recovered from the minivan. Strenger was transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner determined that Strenger died from multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the death a homicide.
Following the incident, Anthony Bell and Antonio Henderson were charged with the murder of Warren Strenger. Both men were ordered held without bail by Judge Michael Clancy at a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. The legal proceedings against Bell and Henderson highlighted the severity of the crime and the swift response by law enforcement. The case drew attention to the ongoing issues of gun violence and public safety in Chicago.
