In the early morning hours of April 13, 2015, the life of 28-year-old LaRonda McElroy was tragically cut short in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Responding to a call at 6:50 a.m., police discovered McElroy lying in her front yard on West 29th, having been shot. She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later. The incident left a community in shock and a family devastated.
Witnesses at the scene reported that McElroy had been involved in an argument with
a man outside her home just before the shooting. They stated that the man shot her twice during the dispute. The suspect was identified as Christopher Fletcher, the 38-year-old father of two of McElroy's three children. In the days leading up to her death, McElroy had expressed fear of Fletcher on social media. She had posted that the police had warned him to stay away from her just two days before she was killed. A friend also posted on her behalf, indicating that Fletcher was angry and jealous because she had moved on with someone else.
Following the shooting, Fletcher fled the state. An immediate investigation was launched, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of capital murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was apprehended overnight in Amarillo, Texas. Fletcher pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, during his trial in March 2017, McElroy's own children, two of whom were Fletcher's, testified that they witnessed him shoot their mother.
A Jefferson County Circuit Court jury found Christopher Fletcher guilty of capital murder. After the state waived the death penalty, the judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He also received an additional 15-year sentence for using a firearm in the commission of the crime. The tragic end to LaRonda McElroy's life highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and left her children without their mother.
