On the evening of July 27, 2015, the life of 25-year-old Latosha Lewis, a Black female, was tragically cut short in a shooting at the Shorter Gardens Apartment complex in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Responding to calls of gunfire at approximately 9:50 p.m., police discovered Lewis on the ground with a fatal gunshot wound to her chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death moved swiftly, and by the following morning, U.S.
Marshals had apprehended 26-year-old Shaquanna Staten in connection with the homicide. Staten was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and held without bond at the Pulaski County Jail. During a court appearance on July 30, 2015, she entered a plea of not guilty.
According to Lewis's mother, Freda Rogers, her daughter was not acquainted with the alleged shooter. Rogers conveyed her belief that the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving another individual and that her daughter was an unintended victim. While grappling with the immense pain of her loss, Rogers expressed a sentiment of hurt rather than anger toward the woman accused of taking her daughter's life. Latosha Lewis was remembered by loved ones as a happy and loving person with a great personality. She was an employee at McDonald's and had attended Shorter College.
