In the quiet community of Lead Hill, Arkansas, a welfare check requested by concerned friends led to a grim discovery in October 2015. Helen Froehlich, a 61-year-old female, was found deceased in her home, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. It appeared she was taken completely by surprise, shot while in her bed watching television. The tranquility of the rural property was further shattered by the discovery of a second victim, 60-year-old Frank Simpson, a long-time family friend, who was
found dead from gunshot wounds in a small apartment in a nearby barn. Two of the family's dogs had also been fatally shot.
The investigation quickly focused on a suspect who was located on the same property. Helen's son, Glen Froehlich, was found inside a home that was under construction. A tense standoff with law enforcement ensued, lasting for approximately five hours. Ultimately, authorities were able to de-escalate the situation, and Glen Froehlich surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident. Investigators recovered a rifle at the scene.
Authorities revealed that there had been a history of family disputes, with prior incidents involving Glen Froehlich being reported to law enforcement. Just weeks before the fatal shootings, deputies had been called to the residence due to threats Glen had allegedly made with a firearm. In the aftermath of the killings, he was charged with two counts of capital murder. In March 2019, Glen Froehlich pleaded no contest to the capital murder charges for the deaths of his mother and Frank Simpson. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
