In the small city of Corning, Arkansas, a violent encounter on a Sunday afternoon in June brought a sudden and tragic end to the life of James Edward Prater III. On June 12, 2016, the 55-year-old man was fatally shot in the 800 block of 6th Street. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., prompted an investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Corning Police Department, the Clay County Sheriff's Department, and the Arkansas State Police.
Authorities quickly
identified a suspect in the shooting, a man named Bryan Curtis. Investigators believed that Curtis was the individual who shot and killed Prater, though the motive behind the deadly act remained unclear. According to the Clay County Sheriff, the two men were thought to have barely known each other.
Following the shooting, Bryan Curtis was taken into custody and held at the Clay County Detention Center. The Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney announced that Curtis would be charged with first-degree murder in connection with Prater's death. Subsequently, a Clay County jury found Bryan Curtis, who was 46 at the time, guilty of the first-degree murder of James Prater.
