On December 17, 2016, three-year-old Acen Ameer King was tragically shot and killed in Little Rock, Arkansas, during a road rage incident. Acen was in the backseat of a maroon Dodge Charger driven by his grandmother, Kim King-Macon, who was en route to a shopping center with her grandson and a one-year-old child. As they approached a stop sign, a black Chevrolet Impala, driven by Gary Eugene Holmes, honked at King-Macon.
After she honked back, Holmes exited his vehicle and fired a single shot into the back of the Charger, fatally wounding Acen.
Holmes, 33, was arrested on December 22, 2016, after a family member turned him in. He was charged with capital murder and two counts of committing a terroristic act. According to an affidavit, Holmes's girlfriend, who was in the car with him at the time of the shooting, stated that Holmes became upset because he believed the Dodge Charger was following him too closely. In response, he pulled over, allowed the vehicle to pass, and then fired a shot at the car. The girlfriend reported that Holmes remarked, 'That's what you get for following me around.'
During the trial, King-Macon testified about the harrowing experience, describing how she did not realize her grandson had been shot until they arrived at the shopping center. The prosecution argued that Holmes's actions were intentional and reckless, leading to the death of an innocent child. The defense contended that Holmes did not intend to harm anyone and that the shooting was a tragic accident.
On August 22, 2018, after a trial that began on August 21, Holmes was found guilty of first-degree murder and terroristic act charges. He was sentenced to 45 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections for first-degree murder, along with additional sentences for employing a firearm and committing a terroristic act. Holmes is not eligible for parole due to his prior felony convictions, which include battery and sexual assault.
The death of Acen King highlighted the dangers of road rage and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. His family and the community continue to mourn his loss, remembering him as a 'Mr. Spectacular' who brought joy to those around him.
