On February 14, 2017, at approximately 3:25 a.m., 26-year-old Jessee Wade Arthur from Springfield, Missouri, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel on McCain Park Drive in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Officers arrived to find Arthur lying on the ground with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was believed to be a robbery that escalated to murder.
In the days following the shooting, the North Little Rock Police Department initiated an investigation, leading to the identification of two suspects: 22-year-old Chester Lee Smith of Little Rock and 25-year-old Nathaniel Clark of Sherwood. Both were charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery. Smith surrendered to authorities in North Little Rock, while Clark turned himself in at a probation and parole office in Conway. Court records did not show that either man had been formally charged at the time of their surrender.
