In the quiet town of Booneville, Arkansas, a horrific tragedy unfolded, forever altering the lives of a young family. Twenty-two-year-old Rachel Lynn King, a loving mother of three young children, was found dead in her home on East South Street on the morning of September 4, 2019. The devastating discovery was made after police responded to a domestic disturbance call.
Her father, Jimmy King, arrived at the home at the same time as the police and was the first to find his daughter.
The investigation into the young woman's death quickly identified a person of interest, Morgan Weatherford. He was apprehended in Conway, Arkansas, and transported to Logan County for questioning. It was revealed that Weatherford had broken into Rachel's home through a back window, entering her son's bedroom. In a chilling confession to the police, Weatherford admitted to strangling King and striking her head on the ground multiple times. Tragically, one of Rachel's young sons witnessed the brutal attack on his mother.
Following the violent assault, Weatherford stole Rachel's 2003 Ford Expedition to escape the scene. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned near a KFC restaurant in Booneville and was taken in by the police for evidence processing. After a four-day jury trial in December 2022, Morgan Weatherford, then 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder, residential burglary, and theft of property. The jury delivered the maximum sentences for all charges, resulting in a life sentence for the murder of Rachel King, with an additional ten-year enhancement for committing the crime in the presence of her children. He also received 20 years for burglary and six years for theft. The conviction brought a measure of justice to a family shattered by the senseless loss of a young mother.
