In the autumn of 2018, the life of 18-year-old LaTija Luckey, a Black female, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence on the streets of Little Rock, Arkansas. On the evening of Friday, November 16, 2018, LaTija was inside a vehicle with three other young people near the intersection of West 14th and Peyton streets when gunfire erupted. The car, a black Jeep Renegade, ultimately crashed into a ditch, coming to a rest on its side.
Inside, first responders discovered a scene of immense tragedy.
LaTija, along with 19-year-old Carrington Williams and 20-year-old Kennelle Anderson, had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A fourth individual, a 17-year-old male, was also struck by the gunfire but managed to survive, though he was left in critical condition. The sudden and violent loss of three young lives sent shockwaves of grief and anger through the community. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil, their pain palpable as they mourned the senseless act and prayed for justice. LaTija’s family, including her parents LaTara and Larry Luckey Jr., were left heartbroken, pleading for answers and for anyone with information to come forward.
The Little Rock Police Department launched an investigation into the triple homicide, and their efforts eventually led them to a suspect. In January 2019, authorities identified 21-year-old Joshua Milik Williams as the person allegedly responsible for the shooting. He was located and apprehended in San Diego, California, after a routine stop for a trolley fare violation revealed he had outstanding warrants for the murders. Williams was subsequently arrested and held without bail, awaiting extradition back to Arkansas to face three counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree battery. While an arrest was made, the motive behind the deadly shooting remained unclear to the public.
