In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Little Rock, Arkansas, a call to 911 unraveled a domestic tragedy. Responding officers arrived at a home on Brush Creek Avenue to find 16-year-old Kaelon Presley outside. Inside the residence, his 37-year-old mother, Shondra Miller, a female, was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to her head. Initially, Presley told investigators a harrowing story, claiming that while he was outside chasing their dog after it had gotten loose, an unknown
intruder entered their home and shot his mother.
As detectives began their investigation into what was Little Rock's 41st homicide of the year, Presley's account quickly began to fall apart. He was brought to the 12th Street Station for further questioning. A crucial piece of evidence, surveillance footage from the home, contradicted his version of events, showing that no one else had entered the residence. Faced with the evidence, the teenager's story changed. He eventually confessed to shooting his mother.
Following his confession, Kaelon Presley was arrested and charged as an adult with first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. Prosecutors authorized the adult charges, and he was booked into the Pulaski County Jail with a bond set at $1 million. In subsequent legal proceedings, Presley entered a plea of not guilty. His defense later introduced a motive for the patricide, with Presley alleging that he had been a victim of both physical and mental abuse at the hands of his mother, which led to violent thoughts and ultimately the shooting after an argument.
The allegations of abuse were vehemently denied by those who knew Shondra Miller. Breanna Barnes, Miller's girlfriend who lived with them, described Miller as a woman with a big personality and an even bigger heart, someone who was the 'life of the party' and would give anyone the shirt off her back. Barnes stated that she and others who knew the family were angered by the abuse claims, insisting they were untrue. She acknowledged that Presley had a history of being manipulative but described her relationship with him as close, making the violent act incomprehensible to her. Presley's attempt to have his case transferred to juvenile court was ultimately denied, and the case proceeded in adult court.
