On the evening of April 26, 2021, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at The Greens at the Rock Apartments. When the echoes faded, 20-year-old Roderick O'Brian Shelby II and 23-year-old Andrea Verser lay fatally wounded. The two were ambushed as they were getting out of a vehicle at Shelby's apartment complex around 10:30 p.m.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind grieving families and a community stunned by the sudden violence.
The North Little Rock Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, with detectives beginning the arduous task of piecing together the events of that tragic night. The case fell under the purview of Detective Michael Gibbons, a veteran officer who would become a steadfast presence for the victims' families. In the weeks that followed, investigators worked tirelessly, pursuing leads and interviewing potential witnesses, driven to bring those responsible to justice.
Their efforts began to yield results on May 25, 2021, when police arrested 19-year-old Joecortland Roberson. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of Shelby and Verser. The investigation did not stop there, as authorities believed others were involved. This belief proved true when, on July 19, 2021, a second suspect, 21-year-old Kevon Turner of North Little Rock, was also charged with two counts of capital murder for his alleged role in the killings. While the arrests brought a measure of relief to the families, the investigation into the double homicide was said to be ongoing.
