On the night of January 13, 2022, a domestic disturbance in Dumas, Arkansas, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 36-year-old Jason Jenkins. The male victim was outside a residence at 315 South Ash Street when the incident occurred at approximately 10:55 PM.
Responding to reports of the disturbance, Dumas police officers arrived at the scene to find both Jenkins and another man, 35-year-old Robert Washington, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both men were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Jenkins ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Washington was treated for his wounds and subsequently released.
Shortly after their arrival, police took 34-year-old Derrick Nixon of Dumas into custody at the scene. Nixon was arrested in connection with the shooting and later charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by certain persons. He was held at the Dumas city jail. The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division joined the Dumas Police Department in the ensuing homicide investigation. Initial reports from law enforcement indicated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance that had taken place outside the residence.
