In the quiet town of Dumas, Arkansas, a life full of promise was tragically cut short on a winter's night. Jeffrey Morgan, a 17-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Saturday, February 7, 2015. The incident, which also left another teenager seriously injured, unfolded near the intersection of West Waterman and Peach Streets, sending ripples of shock and grief through the close-knit community.
On that fateful night, at approximately 9:35 p.m., the sound of gunshots shattered
the evening calm. Before law enforcement could arrive at the scene, a passing motorist discovered the two wounded teenagers and transported them to a local hospital. Tragically, Jeffrey Morgan was pronounced dead upon arrival. The second victim, an 18-year-old, was reported to be in serious condition and was later transferred to a medical center in Pine Bluff for further treatment.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. The following day, Todd Thompson, who was 20 or 21 years old at the time, arranged his surrender with the Arkansas State Police in Pine Bluff. He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, first-degree battery, and four counts of aggravated assault. The aggravated assault charges stemmed from four other youths who were with Morgan and the other victim at the time of the shooting; though they were not physically harmed, shots were fired in their direction.
Thompson's bond was set at a substantial $500,000. For the community of Dumas, the senseless act of violence left an indelible scar. Jeffrey Morgan was remembered by his older brother as an energetic and kind-hearted person who loved sports, particularly football and basketball. He was described as someone who enjoyed joking around, dancing, and would do anything to brighten someone's day, a vibrant young life taken far too soon.
