In the late hours of a November night in a quiet neighborhood near Forrest City, Arkansas, a devastating scene unfolded that would leave a community in mourning. On Monday, November 28, 2022, Shalanda Nicole Barton, a 34-year-old female, was found deceased in her home. Her life, along with two others, was cut short by an act of gun violence. The discovery was made after a concerned grandmother requested a welfare check at the residence located in the 500 block of Gore Street in the Crow Creek community of Madison, just outside of Forrest City.

When St. Francis County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home, they found a tragic scene. Shalanda Barton, along with 31-year-old Jaterrance Wright and Shalanda's 12-year-old daughter, Kelsi Marie Thompson, had all been shot to death. The news of the triple homicide sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends and family to grapple with the senseless loss of three lives. A surviving four-year-old child was also found in the home and was safely relocated with their grandmother.

The investigation into the killings led authorities to a suspect close to home. In February 2023, Jonathan Rolfe, Shalanda Barton's 17-year-old son, was arrested and charged with three counts of capital murder and one count of theft of property. Investigators were able to connect him to the crime through several key pieces of evidence. Shalanda's black Cadillac was discovered near the home of Rolfe's girlfriend, and the key fob for the vehicle was found in his possession. The St. Francis County Sheriff described the act as 'absolutely cold-blooded murder.' The community was left to reconcile the tragic loss of a mother, her daughter, and a friend, at the hands of her own son.
