Just a day after her eighteenth birthday, Aonesty Selby, a young woman from Williamsburg, Virginia, was reported missing by her family on January 11, 2023. The search for the teen, who was described as bubbly and outgoing with dreams of becoming a cosmetologist, ended in heartbreak. Her family, aided by a friend who was able to ping her phone's location, discovered her body on a remote logging path in Isle of Wight County on January 13, 2023.
An autopsy later confirmed that the 18-year-old had died from a single gunshot wound.
The investigation into her death quickly led authorities to a suspect. Investigators determined that on the day she disappeared, Selby had taken an Uber to Newport News to meet with Andarius McClelland. McClelland, who was 21 at the time, later told investigators that he and Selby had been dating on and off for a couple of months. On January 17, 2023, Andarius McClelland was arrested at his apartment in Newport News and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Aonesty Selby's death. He later admitted to investigators that he had shot Selby during an argument, stating that he panicked and fled the scene.
In July 2025, in a move that brought a mix of emotions for Selby's family, Andarius McClelland accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in committing a felony. As a result of the plea agreement, a first-degree murder charge was dropped. Selby's mother expressed her pain and disappointment with the plea deal, stating that she did not feel it was true justice for her daughter. McClelland faces a maximum of 43 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
