On the crisp autumn evening of October 9, 1980, Patsy Bray Cowan, a vibrant 50-year-old Caucasian real estate agent, returned to her home in the 4400 block of Smokey Lake Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia, unaware that her life was in imminent danger. Earlier that day, she had attended a real estate and builders picnic in Chesapeake, a gathering to announce a new development. She was seen leaving the event alone in her 1976 Oldsmobile, arriving at her residence at approximately 8:15 p.m.
