In the early morning hours of July 2, 1990, a quiet night in Gothenburg, Nebraska, was shattered by a sudden act of violence that claimed the life of a dedicated public servant. Glenn Hobart Haas, a 42-year-old White/Caucasian male, was a respected sergeant with the Gothenburg Police Department. Although he was off duty, Haas was present at the police station at approximately 3:00 AM when a 17-year-old male arrived, stating that he wished to speak with an officer.
Haas, ever the dedicated officer, offered to assist the young man.
As Sergeant Haas moved into the lobby of the station to speak with the teenager, the situation took a tragic and unforeseen turn. The juvenile had concealed a. 30-06 rifle, and as Haas entered the area, the young man opened fire, critically wounding the unsuspecting officer. Despite the severity of his injuries, medical assistance was quickly rendered, and Sergeant Haas was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney in a desperate attempt to save his life. Tragically, the efforts of the medical personnel were in vain, and he succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and the 17-year-old perpetrator was promptly arrested. The motive for the seemingly senseless act was linked to a prior interaction with law enforcement, as the teenager had been previously cited for criminal mischief. The shooter was subsequently convicted of murder for the death of Sergeant Haas. He was initially sentenced to life in prison for his crime. However, due to his status as a juvenile at the time of the offense, his sentence was later revisited. On October 4, 2016, the assailant's sentence was modified to a term of 80 to 99 years in prison. Sergeant Haas was a veteran law enforcement officer who had served with the Gothenburg Police Department for 12 years and had previously been with the Cozad Police Department for seven years. His sudden and violent death left behind a grieving wife, son, and daughter, as well as a community in mourning for a man who had dedicated his life to their protection.
