On June 30, 1974, Linda Leon, a 22-year-old female, was found murdered in her Phoenix, Arizona home alongside her husband, Randy. The tragic discovery marked the beginning of an investigation into a brutal crime that had unfolded within their own residence. The couple was known to be involved in the sale of large quantities of marijuana, a fact that would prove central to the motive behind their slayings.
Investigators learned that a 19-year-old named Jose Jesus Ceja had gone to the
Leon's home with the intention of robbing them of a significant amount of marijuana. Finding Linda at home alone, Ceja proceeded to attack her. During the struggle, he shot her twice in the chest. In a horrific escalation of violence, he then dragged her into a bedroom and shot her four more times in the head, using a pillow to muffle the gunshots.
After murdering Linda, Ceja lay in wait for her husband to return. When Randy Leon entered the house, Ceja, having emptied his own weapon, found a gun belonging to Randy and shot him multiple times. After killing the couple, Ceja stole approximately 70 pounds of marijuana from the home. In a chilling attempt to mislead anyone who might come to the house, he took the phone off the hook and turned on the television to create the illusion that the residents were home and undisturbed.
In the days that followed, Jose Jesus Ceja’s behavior was brazen. He attended the funerals of his victims, assisted their family with moving furniture, and even offered to help the police in their search for the killer. However, the investigation soon focused on him, and he was arrested for the murders of Linda and Randy Leon. Ceja was subsequently tried and convicted on two counts of first-degree murder. After spending 23 years on death row, Jose Jesus Ceja was executed for his crimes on January 21, 1998.
