In the border town of Nogales, Arizona, a routine traffic stop on the evening of January 7, 1991, tragically escalated, leading to the death of a veteran law enforcement officer. Sergeant Manuel Hurtado Tapia, a 41-year-old male with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, pulled over a vehicle driven by a man suspected of being a drug trafficker.
As Sergeant Tapia and a Nogales police officer approached the vehicle, the driver, identified as Noel Gonzales-Bernal of Nogales, Sonora,
Mexico, was asked to open the trunk of his car. At that moment, Gonzales-Bernal fled on foot, initiating a chase with the officers. In the ensuing pursuit, the suspect turned and fired at Sergeant Tapia, inflicting a fatal wound.
Tragically, it was later discovered that Sergeant Tapia had inadvertently left his own firearm in his vehicle. Despite being rushed to Tucson Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of January 8, 1991. The suspect, Noel Gonzales-Bernal, was shot and killed by the accompanying Nogales police officer at the scene of the altercation. Sergeant Tapia was a respected figure, having served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War before his 17 and a half years in law enforcement.
