In the late spring of 1993, a sense of sorrow fell over the community of South Tucson, Arizona. John Anthony Valenzuela, a 27-year-old male officer with the South Tucson Police Department, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. He had served on the force for two years, where he was known for his dedication, particularly in his role as a school resource officer.
On a fateful day in May, Officer Valenzuela was involved in serving a warrant connected to a sensitive sex offense
investigation. He and his fellow officers proceeded to a residence located near the intersection of West 38th Street and South 9th Avenue. Upon making contact with the suspect in the home's garage, the situation rapidly escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire.
During the shootout, the suspect's rifle was damaged, prompting him to retreat inside the house. He soon reemerged with a second rifle and opened fire. Officer Valenzuela, who had taken cover behind a bush, was fatally wounded by the suspect’s gunfire. The other officers on the scene immediately returned fire, and the suspect was killed during the confrontation.
The loss of Officer John Anthony Valenzuela was a profound blow to his family, friends, and the entire South Tucson community.
