Robin Blasnek, a 22-year-old female, was walking to her boyfriend's home in Mesa, Arizona on the night of July 30, 2006, when her life was tragically cut short. At approximately 11:15 p.m., the sound of a single gunshot echoed through the neighborhood. Residents who rushed to help found Robin wounded but still alive. She was quickly transported to a local hospital, but she soon lost consciousness and succumbed to her injuries.
Her death was not an isolated incident but rather the final
act in a string of violent crimes that had been terrorizing the Phoenix metropolitan area for over a year. Investigators quickly linked her shooting to a series of random, late-night attacks attributed to a 'Serial Shooter.' This individual, or individuals, were believed to be responsible for dozens of shootings involving people and animals, which had resulted in multiple deaths and injuries since May 2005. The connection was made based on forensic evidence and the similar nature of the crimes, which typically targeted pedestrians and bicyclists after dark when there were few witnesses.
Just four days after Robin's murder, a major breakthrough in the case led to the arrests of two men, Dale S. Hausner, 33, and Samuel John Dieteman, 30. The pair were taken into custody at their apartment in Mesa following a period of intense surveillance by law enforcement. A search of their residence uncovered weapons and a map that marked the locations of the shootings, providing significant evidence of their involvement. Following his arrest, Dieteman admitted to his and Hausner's participation in some of the crimes.
Hausner and Dieteman were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder and numerous counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the year-long shooting spree. Their capture brought an end to the reign of terror that had gripped the community and provided answers, though no solace, to the families of the victims, including the loved ones of Robin Blasnek, the last life claimed in their senseless wave of violence.
