In the summer of 2011, a promising life was tragically cut short in Scottsdale, Arizona. On August 17th, 24-year-old Vanessa Smith Klein, a female who had moved from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in a violent encounter that stunned the community. The events of that evening unfolded at the residence of her 60-year-old boyfriend, Steven C. Lester.
According to reports, Lester had summoned Klein to his home. Upon her arrival, she was met with a fatal confrontation at the door.
Lester shot her multiple times before taking his own life. The incident was later determined to be a murder-suicide, a grim punctuation to what was a pattern of domestic violence-related fatalities in Arizona that year.
In the wake of this tragedy, those who knew Vanessa were left to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss. She was survived by her parents, Eleonora and Stephen Smith, as well as her sister Christine and brother Julian. Family and friends gathered for her funeral services on September 2, 2011, in Hope Mills, North Carolina, to mourn and remember a young woman whose life had been violently and prematurely ended. There were no further arrests or suspects in the case as the perpetrator had died at the scene.
