On November 26, 2024, 30-year-old Tomas Newman, also known as Tamás, was fatally shot in Houston, Texas. According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Newman had gone to check on a neighbor's house in the 200 block of Uvalde Road when he encountered Adrian G. Reeves, 35, who allegedly shot him. Reeves was reportedly searching for someone else with whom he had a conflict but came across Newman instead.
Following the incident, a SWAT team apprehended Reeves after a standoff at a Baytown hotel on December 5, 2024. Reeves was subsequently charged with murder in connection with Newman's death.
Newman was born on November 11, 1994, and was the son of Nakisha Newman and David Renfro. He was a former football standout at Enterprise Attendance Center and went on to play for Virginia University-Lynchburg and the Arena Football League's Wyoming Mustangs. He graduated in 2013 and was recently added to his high school's Wall of Fame.
Funeral services for Newman were held on December 13, 2024, at Pine Grove Church in Sontag, Mississippi, with visitation on December 12 at Williams Mortuary. He was laid to rest in the Pine Grove Church Cemetery.
