On December 1, 2024, 20-year-old Mark Randall Howard was fatally shot at his father's property in Sabine County, Texas. His father, Michael C. Howard, a 68-year-old attorney from Houston, reported the incident to authorities on December 2, claiming he had accidentally shot his son, mistaking him for an intruder. Michael Howard stated that after the shooting, he transported Mark's body to a remote area on his property, placed it on a wood and trash pile, and set it on fire, believing this was in accordance with his son's wishes.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered charred human remains at the scene, including bones and a mandible with teeth. The area showed signs of being washed, suggesting an attempt to clean the crime scene. The remains were sent to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office for further analysis.
Michael Howard was arrested and charged with murder and tampering with evidence. His bond was set at $20 million, with $10 million allocated for each charge. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming.
