On December 14, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred at a makeshift nightclub in northeast Houston, Texas, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to four others. The victims were identified as 16-year-old King Randle and 14-year-old A'zirya Bankhead. The incident took place around 11:20 p.m. at a venue known as the "Curfew Club," located in the 10100 block of Jensen Drive near the Eastex Freeway.
The gathering was a pop-up party, predominantly attended by juveniles.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as attendees fled the venue following the gunfire. According to Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra, the crowd was "majority juveniles," and the situation was "kind of like one of these last-minute parties, pop-up parties that have been popping up lately."
King Randle was an aspiring artist who had been preparing for his first public performance that evening. His mother described him as an "old soul" who loved music and nature. She shared that he meditated daily, ate healthily, and had a deep appreciation for the environment. Tragically, he was shot and killed before he could take the stage.
A'zirya Bankhead, a 14-year-old eighth grader at YES Prep, was also fatally shot during the incident. Her family expressed their heartbreak, stating, "Nobody was expecting this to happen. It's sad that she had to have her life taken at so young for something that was so senseless."
Four other teenagers, aged 13 to 19, sustained injuries. The 13-year-old girl was reported to be in critical condition, while the others were listed in stable condition.
The Houston Police Department responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Witnesses described the suspect as a tall, thin Black male wearing all-black clothing, a black hooded sweatshirt, and a black mask covering his face. As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage to contact Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of pop-up parties, especially those targeting young people. City officials and law enforcement are considering measures to regulate such events to prevent future tragedies. Councilman Mario Castillo expressed his concerns, stating, "We found the Certificate of Occupancy was not in place for this building. We also learned currently the fire marshal's office enforces that. Can we also get HPD the authority to enforce Certificate of Occupancy violations?"
The community continues to mourn the loss of these young lives and hopes for justice and increased safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
