On December 11, 1901, John C. James, a 34-year-old male police officer of the Houston Police Department, was fatally shot in the line of duty. The incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. on the northwest corner of San Jacinto and Congress streets, near Yaden's Saloon. Officer James and his colleague, Officer Herman Youngst, were responding to a disturbance involving Sid Preacher, a well-known gambling promoter in Houston.
