In a tragic turn of events on the evening of December 20, 2024, a shooting in a Northwest Oklahoma City neighborhood claimed the life of 15-year-old Abel Her. The incident also left his 14-year-old sister injured. The young male victim, Abel, was a beloved son, brother, and friend, remembered for his bright, loving soul and infectious laugh.
The violence erupted when Jerry Yang arrived at the home of his estranged wife.
A protective order had previously been filed against Yang by Abel's mother in July of that year, which included all five of her children. Yang had a history of domestic violence, including a previous arrest for attempting to run the woman and her children off the road. On this particular evening, Yang began making threats against the family before opening fire.
Following the shooting of the two teenagers, law enforcement responded to the scene. A shootout ensued between Yang and the responding officers. During the exchange of gunfire, one officer sustained a minor injury when a bullet struck his pocketknife. The confrontation ended with Yang turning the gun on himself. Police later confirmed that both Abel Her and Jerry Yang were deceased at the scene.
