On November 22, 2024, at approximately 10 p.m., Greenville police officers were alerted by a concerned citizen in the Walmart parking lot on Greenville Boulevard. They discovered 28-year-old Jhari Alize Henderson unresponsive in his vehicle, having sustained a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities identified 18-year-old Ayden resident, Armoni Whitfield, as the primary suspect.
She was apprehended by the Greenville Police Department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the Pitt County Sheriff's Office. Whitfield has been charged with an open count of murder and is currently held without bond at the Pitt County Detention Center.
Detectives believe this was a targeted incident, though the specific motive remains unclear. The relationship between Henderson and Whitfield has not been publicly disclosed. Authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Henderson, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, was born on April 6, 1996. He attended schools in Virginia, Mississippi, and North Carolina, graduating from the Mississippi Youth Challenge Academy. At 16, he earned a full basketball scholarship to Belhaven University. Henderson was known as a social media influencer and aspiring rap artist, and he also worked as a driver for Uber and DoorDash. He is survived by his parents, children, siblings, and extended family.
Funeral services were held on December 7, 2024, at Relevant Empowerment Church in Jackson, Mississippi, followed by a visitation on December 13 at Willis and Sons Funeral Home. The investigation into Henderson's death is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details at this time.
