On December 3, 2024, at approximately 3 p.m., Durham police responded to reports of a shooting in the 2900 block of Bertland Avenue, near Leyburn Place. Upon arrival, officers discovered 52-year-old Gary Dywane Singletary suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Neighbors expressed shock, describing the area as typically safe and peaceful.
One resident remarked, "I've always felt like this is a really safe area so this is incredibly surprising. I never would have expected this." Another added, "I'm more concerned about the victim and their family and what they're going through. My heart goes out to everybody. That just sucks. That just really sucks."
The Durham Police Department indicated that the shooting did not appear to be random, suggesting a targeted attack. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects.
