In the early hours of December 4, 2024, a celebration turned to tragedy in Omaha, Nebraska, resulting in the death of 33-year-old Large King Jr., a Black/African American male. The night began with Large and his 26-year-old brother, Nicholas King, out celebrating a birthday. However, upon their return to a residence near 114th and Elm Streets, an argument erupted between the two brothers.
The dispute escalated, culminating in a fatal act of violence.
According to court documents, Nicholas King retrieved a firearm from the main level of the house. He then waited for Large to come downstairs and intentionally fired a single shot, striking his brother. Omaha police responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 2:46 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Large King Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to CUMC-Bergan Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath, investigators took two individuals at the scene to police headquarters for questioning. Nicholas King was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. During his initial court appearance, prosecutors stated that Nicholas had confessed to shooting his brother. Despite the defense pointing out his lack of prior felony convictions, the judge ordered him to be held without bond. In a later court proceeding, Nicholas King pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was sentenced to serve seven to fourteen years in prison, with an additional one to two years for weapons charges.
Large King Jr. was remembered as a devoted family man and a skilled tradesman who worked as a foreman for Helm Mechanical. A 2010 graduate of Millard High School, he had been a talented wrestler, placing third in the state meet during his senior year. He is survived by his parents, a son, and his siblings. The community was left in shock by the tragic killing, with many expressing their grief over the violent end to a fraternal dispute.
