In the early hours of Sunday, March 7, 2010, the life of 24-year-old African-American Qjuan Moore was tragically cut short in Omaha, Nebraska. Moore was one of three men who perished in two separate shootings that police believed were related to gang activity. Just before 2 a.m., a car carrying Moore and 23-year-old Jonas L. Amerson crashed into a yard in a north Omaha neighborhood near 42nd and Browne Streets. Both men had been shot.
While Amerson was pronounced dead at the scene, Moore was rushed to Creighton University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Family members later recounted to Moore's co-workers that he had been giving Amerson a ride. They believed the shooting may have stemmed from a fight Amerson had been involved in the previous day. A neighbor near the scene of the crash reported hearing an argument in his driveway shortly after the car came to a stop, with one man asking about the whereabouts of his phone. Police indicated that at least two other individuals fled from the vehicle after the crash.
Despite the violent end to his life and a past criminal record, those who knew Qjuan Moore painted a picture of a young man striving for a better future. He was a father to four sons, the youngest having been born just a week before his death. Moore was employed as a maintenance worker at the Heart Ministry Center, where he was remembered for his positive attitude, punctuality, and pride in his work. He had expressed a desire to complete his GED and serve as a positive role model for his children, with friends and co-workers stating that his previous time in jail had been a catalyst for change. In the years following the shooting, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murders of Qjuan Moore and Jonas L. Amerson, leaving their case unresolved.
