In the summer of 2021, a family visit in Omaha, Nebraska, took a tragic and unsettling turn, culminating in the death of Jose Valenzuela, a 40-year-old Hispanic male. On July 16th, Valenzuela was fatally shot in an incident that would lead to the arrest of his own son and raise complex questions about mental health.
The man charged in connection with the shooting was Valenzuela's 23-year-old son, Julian Lopez, who was visiting from Florida.
According to police testimony, the circumstances leading to the fatal shots were anything but straightforward. Lopez, who has a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia, claimed that his father had entered his bedroom with a gun and instructed him to shoot him.
During the investigation, Lopez recounted a tense scene where he initially sat on the firearm before his father advanced toward him. He stated that he first fired two warning shots into a wall before ultimately shooting his father twice. This account formed the basis of his attorney's argument that the charge should be manslaughter rather than second-degree murder, asserting that there was no intent to kill his father.
Further complicating the narrative was Lopez's past. At the time of his father's death, he was on probation in Florida for a previous violent act involving another family member. This history, combined with his mental health condition, painted a disturbing picture for investigators and the court. In August 2021, a judge ordered Julian Lopez to stand trial for second-degree murder and a weapons count in the death of his father, Jose Valenzuela.
