In the quiet city of Omaha, Nebraska, the life of a promising young Asian/Pacific Islander man, Vedant Patel, was tragically cut short at the age of 22. On March 5, 2012, Patel, an engineering student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was found stabbed to death in the condo he shared with roommates. His death sent shockwaves through the community and left his family, who had moved from India to the United States to provide him with a better education, utterly devastated.
The
investigation into the violent death quickly focused on one of his roommates, Gregory Dodds, then 24 years old. Authorities reported that Dodds broke into Patel's room and attacked him as he lay in his bed. Following the incident, Dodds was found in his vehicle, making comments that implicated him in the killing, stating that God had told him to do it.
Dodds was arrested and charged with the murder of Vedant Patel. During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that Dodds had been using a synthetic substance known as K2. His defense argued that he was insane at the time of the stabbing due to his extensive use of the drug. However, under state law, drug use is not a defense for insanity. In September 2013, Dodds pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and a weapons charge.
In November 2013, Gregory Dodds was sentenced to 30 to 45 years in prison for the murder of Vedant Patel. He will be required to serve at least 15 years of his sentence.
