On the evening of November 20, 2024, a violent domestic disturbance in West Plains, Missouri, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 48-year-old John Lee Wilson Sr. Officers from the West Plains Police Department were already in the vicinity of Jackson Street around 9:20 p.m. when they heard the sound of gunfire erupting from a nearby neighborhood.
Almost simultaneously, dispatchers received a call from a resident in the 1200 block of Columbus Drive reporting that a man had been shot and was lying on their porch.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement discovered John Lee Wilson Sr. unresponsive on the neighbor's porch, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel were summoned immediately, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly secured the area and determined that the violence had originated at a residence across the street, where the victim lived with his wife.
Police identified the victim's wife, 49-year-old Brandy Gale Wilson, as the primary suspect. During subsequent interviews, she allegedly provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the homicide. She told detectives that the couple had been arguing and that a scuffle ensued inside their home. According to her statement, she retrieved a pistol from a nightstand and shot her husband. When he fled the residence and ran across the street toward a neighbor's house, likely to seek help, she reportedly followed him. She admitted to firing at him again as he stood on the neighbor's porch, continuing to shoot until he collapsed.
Brandy Gale Wilson was taken into custody and charged with a litany of serious felonies in connection with her husband's death. Prosecutors filed charges of first-degree murder, first-degree domestic assault resulting in serious physical injury, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and four counts of armed criminal action. During the investigation, she made statements suggesting she believed her husband had hired people to kill her and that she heard 'snipers' outside the home, claims that investigators noted in their reports as part of her account of the motive. She was held on a $100,000 bond as the legal process against her commenced.
