In the morning hours of a Tuesday in late November, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Stephan Nathaniel McCraine. A 44-year-old White / Caucasian male, McCraine was at the Pine Ridge Gardens Apartments in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 26, 2024, when he was confronted by two individuals. The encounter turned deadly over a pair of Nike Air Jordans. The assailants demanded McCraine surrender his shoes, but he refused. In a tragic turn of events, this refusal led to one of the suspects fatally shooting him in the head. The perpetrators then fled the scene, taking the sneakers with them.

The investigation into the death of Stephan McCraine moved swiftly. On the very same day as the shooting, the Jackson Police Department, with assistance from Rankin County deputies and the Brandon and Pearl Police Departments, apprehended a suspect after a pursuit. The individual taken into custody was identified as 23-year-old Curtis 'Scooter' Sawyer. Authorities charged Sawyer with capital murder in connection with McCraine's death.

Following his arrest, Curtis Sawyer was brought before the court, where he was denied bond. It was revealed that at the time of the incident, Sawyer was already out on bond for a prior aggravated assault charge from 2019. The death of Stephan Nathaniel McCraine was one of eight homicides to occur in Jackson during November 2024, a stark reminder of the escalating violence within the city.
