Christopher Walton, a 52-year-old Black man from Jackson, Mississippi, was remembered by those who knew him for his infectious laughter and love of life. Friends and family described him as a dedicated person who was always ready with a joke or a listening ear.
On the evening of Thursday, December 12, 2024, Mr. Walton was in the 1100 block of Grand Avenue. According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, Mr. Walton became involved in a verbal fight with his girlfriend.
During the argument, the girlfriend's son intervened. Mr. Walton was shot multiple times and was pronounced deceased at the scene before police could arrive.
The Jackson Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts quickly led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Police arrested 23-year-old Kalus Kelly, the son of Mr. Walton’s girlfriend.
Kelly was formally charged with the murder of Christopher Walton. A judge set his bond at $500,000. As of December 2024, the case against Kelly is proceeding through the court system. Investigators have not released a possible motive for the killing.
