In the early evening of a December day in Indianapolis, a violent altercation shattered the peace within an apartment building on the city's east side, leaving a young man dead and a woman fighting for her life. Twenty-six-year-old Walter Lockhart Jr. was fatally wounded in the shooting that occurred around 6:30 p.m. on December 9, 2024, in the 4400 block of East Washington Street.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a heated argument escalated to gunfire.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered both Lockhart and a female companion suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but Lockhart succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly released, remained in critical condition.
