In the early hours of a December morning, the life of 57-year-old Russell McKenzie, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his New Haven, Connecticut apartment. Police were dispatched to his Walnut Street residence near East Street around 1:15 a.m. on December 4, 2024, for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found a woman outside who was extremely distraught and having difficulty breathing; she was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital as a precaution.
Inside the apartment, emergency medical personnel pronounced McKenzie dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into the suspicious death soon became a homicide investigation after the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that McKenzie had died from a gunshot wound. New Haven police detectives executed a search warrant for the apartment as they began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. For months, the case remained under active investigation, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
Nearly five months later, a breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of 36-year-old Eileen Marrero of New Haven. Marrero, who was the woman found outside McKenzie's apartment, was charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a permit. She was taken into custody and held on a $1 million bond. Police indicated that Marrero and McKenzie were friends, and she had claimed the shooting was an accident.
Friends and family of Russell McKenzie remembered him as a devoted father to his five children and a proud grandfather. They recalled his remarkable personal transformation, having recently celebrated 20 years of sobriety, and his dedication to helping others who were struggling. His loved ones described him as a generous individual and a positive light to everyone he encountered. They noted that he had opened his door to help the suspect on several occasions, making his death at her hands a tragic irony.
