On the evening of November 29, 2024, in the small community of Rose Bud, Arkansas, a sudden burst of violence shattered the night's quiet, leaving 54-year-old Gary 'Ricochet' Knight with fatal injuries. A call reporting shots fired came into the White County Dispatch at 9:04 p.m. from Violet Holifield, who stated her husband, Gary Knight, had been shot at their residence on County Line Road. Emergency services arrived to find Knight wounded; he was transported to Unity Health Hospital – ER in Searcy, where he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on November 30, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a neighbor, James Trenton Barley. Shortly after the initial report, Barley himself contacted the dispatch center and admitted his involvement in the shooting. Deputies detained Barley at his home, where he provided a verbal statement to investigators acknowledging his deliberate actions. A search and seizure warrant was executed at Barley's property, leading to the discovery and collection of several firearms, ballistics, and other items related to the incident.
Following the search and his confession, James Trenton Barley was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was subsequently taken to the White County Detention Center.
