In the rural community of Tonto Basin, Arizona, a gathering of teenagers on the night of Saturday, November 30, 2024, ended in a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of two 15-year-old boys. Colten Boyle, a 15-year-old male from the nearby town of Payson, was identified by his family as one of the deceased. The incident, which is being investigated by the Gila County Sheriff's Office as a murder-suicide, has left the close-knit community in a state of shock and mourning.
On that
fateful night, a group of seven young people, with ages ranging from 15 to 20, were present in a remote area of Tonto Basin. According to authorities, alcohol was a factor, with all but one of the individuals having been drinking. An altercation reportedly broke out between two of the 15-year-old boys, escalating to a horrific act of violence. One of the teenagers shot the other before turning the gun on himself.
When first responders from the Gila County Sheriff's Office and the Tonto Basin Fire Department arrived at the scene around 11 p.m., they discovered a grim sight. One of the boys was already deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Colten Boyle was found alive but with a critical head wound. He was immediately airlifted to a trauma center in Phoenix for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Colten Boyle succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, December 1, 2024, after being on life support.
In the wake of this tragedy, Colten Boyle's family made the decision to publicly identify him, wanting people to remember him as the victim and not the perpetrator of the violence. His mother, Michelle Boyle, shared a heart-wrenching tribute on social media, describing the immense pain of their loss and celebrating her son's life. Friends and family remembered Colten as a kind, funny, and hardworking young man who had a passion for rodeos and roping competitions. The Gila County Sheriff's Office has continued to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting, though the other teenager involved has not been publicly identified.
