In the spring of 2023, the life of Raydel Calf Looking, a 25-year-old Native American man from the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, came to a tragic and abrupt end in Phoenix, Arizona. On the night of April 15th, in a residential neighborhood where many houses shared a similar appearance, Calf Looking mistakenly approached the wrong home and was shot and killed by the homeowners.
The residents of the house claimed they believed he was breaking in.
Raydel's journey to Phoenix was born from a desire to overcome addiction. He had been referred to what was supposed to be a sober living home, a place called Calm Integrated, by an addiction treatment center in his home state. Initially, there were hopeful signs of progress. However, his family reported that he was moved between different residences as Arizona authorities began to crack down on fraudulent sober living facilities that were exploiting a Medicaid fraud scheme. This constant disruption led to a relapse.
Concerned for his well-being, his family, with the help of a grassroots organization, managed to locate him at another house where he was heavily intoxicated. Despite his mother's pleas and her offer of a plane ticket back to Montana, Raydel expressed a desire to remain in Arizona and build a new life for himself.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain a point of contention for his family. While the official account from the homeowners was that they acted in self-defense during a perceived home invasion, Calf Looking's family has raised questions, suggesting that he may have been shot in the back as he was trying to leave the property. They have voiced their frustration over the lack of definitive answers and accountability in his death. As of late 2025, there have been no publicly available reports detailing any arrests or charges against the homeowners in connection with the shooting.
