In the quiet community of Waddell, Arizona, a shocking act of violence shattered the peace of the Wat Promkunaram Buddhist temple. On the morning of August 10, 1991, the bodies of nine individuals were discovered, among them a 37-year-old male of Thai descent named Boochuay Chaiyarach. The victims were found lying face down in a circle, each having been shot in a manner that suggested a calculated execution.
The tranquil temple had been transformed into a scene of unimaginable horror.
The subsequent investigation revealed a gruesome sequence of events. The motive for the massacre was determined to be robbery. Along with Boochuay Chaiyarach, the other victims included five monks, a nun, a novice monk, and a temple employee. The perpetrators had stolen approximately $2,600 and some audio-visual equipment from the temple. The brutality of the crime sent shockwaves through the local and national community, prompting an intensive search for those responsible.
Initial stages of the investigation led to the wrongful arrest of four men from Tucson, who became known as the 'Tucson Four.' They were eventually exonerated and later received a significant settlement for their wrongful arrest. The breakthrough in the case came when investigators traced the murder weapons, a. 22-caliber rifle and a 20-gauge shotgun, to two local teenagers.
Ultimately, Johnathan Doody and Allesandro Garcia were identified as the perpetrators of this heinous crime. During interrogations, Garcia confessed that he and Doody had entered the temple with the intention to rob it. He claimed that Doody panicked, fearing that one of the monks recognized him, and proceeded to shoot all nine victims. Garcia then admitted to shooting four of the victims again to ensure they were deceased. Both Doody and Garcia were charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder. To avoid the death penalty, Garcia pleaded guilty and received a lengthy prison sentence. Doody was also found guilty and sentenced to a significant term in prison.
