On what should have been a festive Christmas Day, a Huntsville, Alabama community was shaken by the tragic death of 37-year-old Leah Jones. On the afternoon of December 25th, Huntsville Police responded to a call of a possible shooting in progress on Uvalde Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered Jones inside a residence with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Madison County Coroner later ruled her death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect who had reportedly fled the scene on foot. Investigators released surveillance footage to the public showing a person of interest leaving the residence shortly after the shooting occurred. This individual was seen wearing a red hoodie and camouflage pants. Following leads generated from the investigation and public assistance, law enforcement identified 35-year-old Marion Joseph Mercer as the primary suspect in Jones's murder.
A multi-state search for Mercer concluded with his arrest in Greenville, Mississippi, by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Following his capture, Mercer was extradited back to Alabama and booked into the Madison County Jail to face a murder charge in connection with the fatal Christmas Day shooting. While an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to bring closure to the family of Leah Jones.
